As per the announcement of a medical college in Karur by the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa on August 12, 2014, under Rule No 110, land was identified at Sanapiratti and a Medical College was constructed at a cost of Rs 269.59 crore and was inaugurated through video conferencing by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on July 31, 2019, for admission for the first year thereafter. The people felt that their long pending demand for medical college became true.
As a part of the developmental process, the state government allocated a sum of Rs 155.80 crore for a medical college hospital with auditorium, staff quarters and hostels for the resident medical officers and the students, canteen and kitchen. The seven-storey GH would house 700 beds with facilities including Out Patient Ward, Maternity ward, Emergency ward, ENT, gynecology, pancreatic, neo-natal ward, ophthalmology, radiology, anesthesia, cardiology and orthopedic facilities.
On Thursday, the Chief Minister along with Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam dedicated the hospital to the public.
He also dedicated additional buildings at Kulithalai GH built at a cost of Rs 5 crore, PHC at Vangal worth Rs 1.20 crore.
Later, Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar said that the dream of the people Karur has come true and all the facilities for a medical college hospital would be housed here. With the fulfillment of the much awaited facility, the people from Karur can get the best medical care at their place as they were earlier dependent of the adjacent districts like Tiruchy, Namakkal and Salem.
