CHENNAI/MADURAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday announced that the state government will construct a manimandapam (memorial) in honour of late freedom fighter Tyagi Immanuel Sekaran, at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district.

A statue of the late freedom fighter will also be installed at the memorial to be constructed at a cost of Rs 3 crore too mark his birth centenary.

The announcement comes on the occasion of the freedom fighter’s 66th death anniversary being observed on Monday.

State Ministers and leaders of various political parties paid rich tributes to the late freedom fighter at his hometown of Paramakudi.

In a statement here, CM Stalin said several representations were received from people from the hometown of the late leader, as well as from his descendants, requesting the government to construct a manimandapam in his honour.

“In recognition of his social contributions and his role in fighting for the freedom of the oppressed classes and as part of fulfilling the long pending demand of the public, a memorial will be constructed in honour of Immanuel Sekaran to commemorate his birth anniversary (he was born on October 9, 1924) at the place where he was buried in his home town of Paramakudi on behalf of the state government,” he added.

Later, CM Stalin, in a social media post, also paid rich tributes and recalled his contributions to the freedom movement on the occasion of his death anniversary.

After paying tributes, Udhayanidhi, at Madurai airport said the DMK was formed primarily for ideology and principles and its rule is secondary. Above all, social justice is more important and added that he would keep on talking about Sanatana Dharma.

Replying to queries, he asked when did former CM Karunanidhi support the idea of ‘One Nation, One Election?’ Criticising PM Narendra Modi, he said the BJP-led government should be sent home after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
