Currently, residents of Annanur have to go to CTH Road near Avadi or Cholambedu to board MTC buses to Padi and Koyambedu, while those living in Ayapakkam take a roundabout way via Ambattur to reach Avadi.
All their woes will come to an end if the flyover project connecting Annanur and Ayapakkam is completed. But there is no signof the project gathering momentum. While the National Highways Department completed its portion of constructing the overhead part of the flyover years ago, the State Highway Department is yet to begin the construction to link the overhead bridge on both sides.
Vinothkumar, a private firm employee from Annanur, said that the heavy traffic on CTH Road between Ambattur and Avadi would come down by half if the flyover connecting Ayappakkam Housing Board Road with Annanur is completed. “MTC buses are now being operated from Koyambedu to Ayapakkam. If the flyover is completed, the bus routes could be extended till Avadi and it will hugely benefit the residents by bypassing the traffic on CTH Road. Also, motorists can skip the railway crossing,” he added.
When contacted, a representative of P&C Constructions, contractor for the project, said that they have completed soil test in Ayapakkam and thetest is underway at Annanur. “These tests are done to ensure that the soil has the capacity to withstand the weight of the flyover. It is in the final stages and once officials from Highway Research Station (HRS), Guindy, visit the spot and approve the tests, the construction will begin in January,” he said.
While the contractor is expected to complete the project in three years, nearly one and a half years were spent on soil tests. While the contractor claimed that 18 months are enough to complete the construction, HRS officials were not available for their comment.
