The increase in construction dust in the locality is making their day-to-day life difficult, say residents of Sundar Nagar in Ekkaduthangal. There are over five buildings under construction from Butt Road to Olympia Tech Park, making the area very dusty. Even keeping their windows open for some time makes has become very difficult, they added.

One building is being constructed on the road leading to St Thomas Hospital and two buildings each are built on Dhanakoti Raja Street and stretch from Sundar Nagar to OlympiaTech Park. The construction works are taking place for more than a month now.

“I walk from my house in Sundar Nagar to the Ekkaduthangal metro station every day. The dust drains out all my energy. The Corporation officials should restrict the number of constructions in a locality and keep a check on air pollution created due to them,” opined Soundar R, a resident of Sundar Nagar.

Apart from the dust, the lorries ferrying construction materials to these sites always block the narrow roads in the area and create traffic congestion making it difficult for the motorists to negotiate their way.

“The roads are already bumby and half laid in many places. These lorries take up the space and stall the vehicle movement making driving in this area a nightmare, said Sindhu K,a commuter.

Suraksha S, a resident of Sundar Nagar, also said the lack of any street lights make the locality unsafe. Especially with several workers roped in to carry out the construction works, the officials should ensure the street lights are fixed immediately.

“Walking back home after work is very difficult. Without street light and so many men walking on the roads, even a small sound scares me. We have already complained to the authorities several times demanding street lights in the area,” she said.

Passing the buck around, the Corporation put the blame on SIDCO officials, who in turn washed its hands off the issue. “We do not decide if construction works takes place or not,” said a SIDCO official.
