CHENNAI: A woman functionary of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Ajitha Agnel, allegedly tried to end her life and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital on Thursday, said a Maalaimalar report.

Ajitha Agnel, a resident of Thoothukudi, was reportedly distressed after she was not appointed as the central district secretary of Thoothukudi in the newly announced party organisational list.

TVK president and actor Vijay had released the list of new office-bearers for the district on Tuesday, appointing S T R Samuelraj as central district secretary, A K Maheshwaran for the Thoothukudi northeast district, Madhanraj for the Thoothukudi suburban district, Virgin Arokiya Brighter for the Thoothukudi south district, and Balasubramanian for the Thoothukudi north district.

Vijay had also announced the appointments of joint secretaries, a treasurer and two deputy secretaries, and distributed appointment certificates to the new office-bearers at the party headquarters in Panaiyur.

Believing that she would be appointed to the central district secretary post, Ajitha Agnel reportedly staged a protest at the party headquarters after learning of Samuelraj’s appointment.

Along with her supporters, she allegedly blocked Vijay’s car, leading to brief tension at the venue. Party functionaries and security personnel later cleared the protesters and escorted Vijay into the office.

Ajitha Agnel subsequently staged a sit-in protest at the entrance of the headquarters. Following talks with party leaders, she and her supporters dispersed.

Later, she allegedly attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills. When her condition worsened, she was admitted to a private hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.

Earlier, Ajitha Agnel had posted on social media that her political journey would continue only with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and its leader Vijay until her last breath.
