As part of the project, TVA has started digitising about 900 old textbooks written by eminent academicians, including historian Prof. Nilakanta Sastry for conversion as e-books. These e-books, which contain topics like Engineering, Medicine, History, Philosophy, Maths and Astronomy, would be published online once the project is completed.

According to TNTB&ESC sources, the Corporation, which now publishes only school textbooks had published college books too about two decades ago. Apart from the textbooks it had, the Corporation sourced the books from various libraries in colleges and universities, besides Connemara Public Library.

Sources said that these e-books would not only be helpful for students in Tamil Nadu, but also those interested in these topics in foreign countries like Singapore and Malaysia, which has a substantial population of  Tamilians. Those preparing for civil service and public service commission exams too would get benefited by this project as they could read various topics, including India’s history.

Welcoming the initiative, former Anna University vice-chancellor Prof. D Viswanthan said that digitisation of rare, old important textbooks as e-books would help thousands of students as these books would only be available in few libraries.
