MTC suspends bus crew after rude behaviour in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has suspended a bus driver and conductor following a shocking incident in which an elderly passenger was allegedly assaulted near Vandalur on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred on route number 70C, which was plying to Koyambedu from Kilambakkam bus terminus.
According to reports, the elderly man had boarded the bus using a valid senior citizen pass and occupied a seat exclusively allotted for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Trouble broke out when the conductor reportedly told the elderly man he could not sit there.
Following the heated argument over the seat issue, suddently the driver and conductor allegedly asrained blows on the passenger even as others present in the bus were watching the whole episode.
The assault reportedly continued even after the man was forcibly removed from the vehicle near Vandalur Gate.
Videos of the incident went gone viral on social media, prompting widespread public outrage. Information about the assault of the elderly man by the bus crew also reached the higher officials of Metro Transport Corporation.
In response, MTC confirmed the immediate suspension of both the driver and conductor involved. “This incident is unacceptable. The staff members have been suspended, and appropriate steps will be taken to prevent such behaviour in the future,” the Corporation said in a statement.
