In an attempt to develop students in a holistic way, the MOP Vaishnav College has now made it mandatory for all students to get involved in any of the clubs the institution proposes to start this academic year, in addition to the existing departmental clubs.
Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, principal of the college said that the institution would start 20 clubs, which also include music, public speaking, quizzing, theatre and drama. “We want students to excel in all aspects, for which we want to offer them holistic development. This made us think of starting these new clubs,” she said, adding that all 3,000 students in the college would be split into two groups with 10 clubs performing their activities on the first Thursday from 12 noon to 2 pm and the rest the next week.
For students from the clubs that don’t have an activity on campus on a specific Thursday, would be asked to do activities like community service or visit a library.According to Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, this would also provide students an opportunity to get together irrespective of the year and course they study.
