The DSE Dr S Kannappan in a circular said that as there were lot of good books available in government school libraries and that students should be encouraged to read them as they need to read other books apart from their textbooks.

Heads of schools have also been instructed to inculcate the habit of reading newspapers daily among students, besides motivating them to play games in the evening after school hours.

With an aim to improve students’ social perspective, school heads would have to ensure effective functioning of National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Scouts & Guides, Junior Red Cross (JRC), eco club, consumer forum and other such clubs in school.

As far as suggestion for teachers is concerned, Dr Kannappan has asked teachers to act as role model for students, inspire them by teaching subjects using activity-based methods so that they understand the subject easily.“Teachers should not confine their reading only to their subject textbooks but expand it to other intellectual books as well. Reading new books will help them to come up with several new positive initiatives,” the DSE said in the circular. Teachers have also been instructed to monitor whether all students come to school daily and take effective steps to make sure no student drops out of school. Schools have been asked to ensure students’ safety when they come to school and go back home by deputing two teachers daily on rotation basis for this.
