When asked, a senior CMDA official said that the government did not direct the removal of the tunnels. “Moreover, we are using disinfection nanoparticles in our tunnels. The facilities in other parts of the State were using sodium hypochlorite and Lysol, which is harmful. Nanoparticles won’t affect persons,” the official said.
He added that there was no need for the market management committee to remove the tunnels and the CMDA had instructed the committee to apply for clearance from the Directorate of Public Health for continuous usage of disinfection tunnels using the nanoparticles. An employee of the private firm that erected the tunnels told DT Next that the tunnel used silver nanoparticles extracted from an ayurvedic medicine as disinfectant. Meanwhile, the tunnel that was set up at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital has been converted into a kiosk where the sprinklers have been replaced with facility to wash hands.
