According to police sources, the portion of GNT Road was badly damaged near Athipattu in Sholavaram where the construction of a flyover is going on. Because of the condition of the road, filled with potholes coupled with stagnant water, the motorists passing through the stretch are forced to ride at a very slow pace, officials said.
On Thursday evening, the lorry was coming towards the city on the road from Andhra Pradesh, carrying green chillies from the neighbouring State. When it was near Athipattu, one of the tyres of the vehicle got stuck in a big pothole which the driver could not see because of the stagnant water. Before anyone could realise what was happening, the lorry toppled to the left side.
Just as all this was happening, Rahul, a private firm employee residing in Kundathur near Pallavaram, was riding on the road. Officials said the youth, who was returning home after paying a visit to his relative living in Gummidipoondi, was riding quite close to the vehicle. Before he could react and escape, the lorry flipped over and fell on him.
Though other motorists rushed to him rescue, pulled him from under the heavy lorry and rushed his to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, the doctors there examined and declared him dead on arrival. The Sholavaram police registered a case under IPC Section 304 (a) (death caused due to negligent driving) and arrested the truck driver, Gurusamy (40), a resident of Padianallur.
