CHENNAI: Tensions ran high in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Wednesday as the principal opposition party AIADMK staged a walkout, protesting Speaker M Appavu's refusal to permit discussion on a no-confidence motion submitted against three DMK ministers.
As the session commenced, Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami urged the Chair to take up the matter of the no-confidence motion, asserting that the AIADMK had submitted a formal letter seeking permission to move the motion.
However, the Speaker ruled that the matter was under his consideration and could not be discussed immediately on the floor, leading to uproar on the opposition benches.
Reacting to the protests, Leader of the House Duraimurugan cited Rule 72 of the Assembly procedure, stating that there was no procedural anomaly in moving such a resolution, and it was within the Speaker's prerogative to decide when to take it up.
Dissatisfied with the response, AIADMK members exited the House in protest, alleging that their democratic right to raise issues through due process was being stifled.
The legislators also staged a demonstration within the Assembly premises, raising slogans against the Speaker and accusing him of shielding the ruling party.
