Around, 40 international participants are set to be part of the event as compared to last year’s mere four international participants from Sri Lanka. Two world champions from Indonesia will also participate.
According to the organisers, the seventh Surf Yoga Music fest is a special one, as Chennai will also be part of the Asian Surfing tour calendar.
Surfers from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Bangladesh, besides local stars, will showcase their skills in what is argued to be the biggest surfing fest in Asia. “It is the only surf festival in India. Last year, it was just a surfing event but now it is one of Asia’s most happening tournaments. We expect 200-300 participants from south India alone. As it is considered the next Olympic sport, we are promoting surfing in a big way,” said Rajeev Vijaykumar, Director, Surf Yoga Music fest.
Among Indian surfers, majority of participants are from Puducherry, Mangalore and Kerala.
He said that this year, they have planned the festival to be themed around a village fest. “The village community is involved in the festival in a big way, thus paving the way for them to generate better revenue. Compared to last year, there will be many eateries, product stalls and we have also improved the parking area,” he added.
The organisers also claimed that during the day, apart from the usual surf competitions, yoga sessions involving at least four trainers, would also be held. A night concert will be held on August 24. “This year, there is a lot of expectation from the event,” said one of the organisers.
