COIMBATORE: Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Thursday said that it would be inappropriate to hide the cultural identity of Tamils.

Speaking to reporters on her arrival at Coimbatore International Airport, Tamilisai said that everyone should unite to oppose, if an attempt is made to hide the cultural identity of Tamils.

“Worshiping is the identity of Tamils. Both ‘Saivam’ and ‘Vainavam’ are the two identities of Hinduism. And, therefore it would be inappropriate to hide them,” he said told reporters, in response to remarks by film director Vetrimaaran that king Raja Raja Chozhan was not a Hindu. It was also backed by actor turned politician Kamal Haasan.

On the issue of privatisation of the electricity department in Puducherry and strike by workers, Tamilisai said that privatisation will help to reduce tariffs significantly for people.

“Privatisation will not affect the work of workers and officials in the department. Already, in many states, electricity has been privatised and therefore benefits people through low tariffs. The government does not intend to bring any scheme that will bear impact on the segment,” she said. Further, Tamilisai said that it was a decision taken, in consultation with the Chief Minister, towards public interest.
