'Happy' that someone got justice: Akhilesh Yadav

The four men, all lorry workers, aged between 20 and 24, were arrested on November 29 for raping and killing the woman by smothering her and later burning her body. They were remanded to seven days' judicial custody.

According to Hyderabad police, the accused were shot dead around 6.30 am on Friday when they tried to escape after they were taken to the site of the offence for reconstruction of the scene of the crime.

"Those running away from law...how far could they run from justice. I am happy that someone has got justice but real happiness will come when there will be effective preventive security arrangements and social atmosphere that such heinous crimes never happen with any sister or daughter," Yadav tweeted in Hindi, without mentioning the Hyderabad encounter.

The rape-and-murder had triggered a nationwide outrage with the public and lawmakers demanding speedy punishment to the perpetrators. The Telangana government had ordered setting up of a special court (fast track) to expedite the trial.

Yediyurappa backs police action in Hyderabad encounter
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday backed the Telangana police action killing four accused in the rape and murder of a woman veterinarian near Hyderabad, saying they acted in selfdefence.
"They (accused) tried to attack and escape when they were taken to spot (of crime), so the encounter was inevitable to save their (police) lives," he told reporters here.
According to Cyberabad police, the four, arrested in connection with the brutal incident, were shot dead after they 'attacked' the personnel and attempted to escape when taken to the spot for crime reconstruction early Friday.
Malik of NCP and Gorhe of Sena disapprove of Hyderabad encounter killings
Fear would have been instilled in the people's minds had the Hyderabad woman veterinarian rapemurder case's accused been hanged in public square after following due legal process, NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said on Friday.
Malik also disapproved of the killings of the four accused in an encounter in Hyderabad, saying justice cannot be delivered in an "unjust manner".
All four accused in the rape-and-murder case of the 25-year-old veterinarian near Hyderabad last month were killed in an exchange of fire with police on Friday morning, police said.
"The accused were killed in an encounter. But this is not the way of giving justice. Justice cannot be delivered in an unjust way," Malik told reporters here.
"Fear would have instilled in the minds of the people had they been hanged in chowks after following law and due judicial process," he added.
The Hyderabad encounter took place around 6.30 am when the accused were taken to the site of the offence for reconstruction of the scene of the crime as part of the investigation, a senior police official said.
"They (accused) snatched weapons from police and fired on police and tried to escape... police fired in retaliation in which the four accused died," a senior Telangana police official said.
Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe said the accused should have been punished after following the due process of law.
"I see this is as a conspiracy...it was important that the accused were punished as per law," Gorhe told TV9 Marathi news channel.
She also said it has been observed in many encounters in the past that police themselves ask accused to run away and then open fire at the latter.
Thorough inquiry should be made: P Chidambaram on Hyderabad encounter
Former Union home minister P Chidambaram said on Friday that a "thorough inquiry" should be made into the killing of the four people, accused in the rape and murder of a 25-year-old woman veterinarian in Hyderabad.
All the four accused were killed in an encounter with the police around 6.30 am when they were taken to the site of the offence for reconstruction of the crime scene as part of the investigations, a senior official said.
"I don't know the facts about what happened, but I can say this much, whatever happened, an inquiry should be made into it," Chidambaram told reporters when asked for a reaction on the incident during a press conference here.
"There must be a thorough inquiry to know if it (is a) genuine encounter or whether it is anything else. As a responsible person, I will ask for a thorough inquiry," he added.
The Congress leader was in the city to take part in the party's poll campaign.
"This election in Jharkhand will mark an important turning point -- the BJP on the one side and the secularprogressive parties on the other. Eighty-one members will run the state and I appeal to the people of Jharkhand to remain focused on who will be these 81 people," he said.
Urging the people of the state to vote for the opposition alliance, he said the Congress has dented the BJP in Haryana and denied it power in Maharashtra.
Chidambaram, who was on Wednesday night released on bail from the Tihar Jail after 106 days in custody in the INX Media money-laundering case, also said that the opposition alliance will have a common minimum programme if voted to power.
"We will ensure the firm implementation of the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act, the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act (Acts that protects tribal land in Jharkhand), the Forest Rights Act and the Panchayati Raj Act (Extension to Scheduled Areas)," he said.
He also reiterated his party's promise of crop loan waiver up to Rs 2 lakh, increase in mandays under the MG-NREGA scheme and house for every family, if voted to power.
