2.9 cr people need help for alcohol abuse in India

A nation-wide survey commissioned by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment revealed that 14.6 per cent of people in the country use alcohol, 2.8 per cent use cannabis and 2.1 per cent uses opioids. According to the data, 16 crore people consume alcohol while 3.1 crore people use cannabis and 2.26 crore people are found using opioids.

Use of alcohol, the most common psychoactive substance, is considerably higher among men compared to the woman. 

For one woman who consumes alcohol, there are 17 alcohol using men.  States with the highest prevalence of alcohol use are Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa.

At the national level, 2.9 crore people, who use alcohol in a dependent pattern, need help for alcohol abuse.

When it comes to the use of cannabis or ganja, approximately 2.2 crore people are found to be using bhang, a drink which is a legal form of the particular narcotics substance. State with the highest prevalence of cannabis use are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.

In the opioid section, heroin is the most used item followed by pharmaceutical opioid and opium. North Eastern states like Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram have highest prevalence of opioid narcotics.

About 1.08 crore people use inhalant variants of narcotics and the prevalence is higher among children than adults.  An estimated 4.6 lakh children using inhalant need help for their dependence, the survey indicated.

The survey was conducted by National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi. 

The household sample survey among a representative sample of population aged between 10 to 75 years old of all the States and Union Territories in the country. 

As many as 2,00,111 households were visited in 186 districts of the country and a total of 4,73,569 individuals were interviewed. The data was collected between December 2017 and October 2018.
