Assam flood situation improves

The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement, though over 87,000 people are affected in Golaghat, the lone district currently hit by the deluge today.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its bulletin that 87,300 people are now suffering because of flood in the district.

Till yesterday, nearly 1.05 lakh people were affected in five districts.

No fresh deaths were reported and the total number of persons who lost their lives in the two waves of flood this year across the state stands at 45.

Currently, 116 villages are under water and 7,085 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, the ASDMA said.

It said the authorities are running 120 relief camps and distribution centres in Golaghat district, where 25,944 people have taken shelter.

Currently, the Brahmaputra river at Nimatighat in Jorhat, the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali river at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur are flowing above the danger marks, the ASDMA report added.

Massive erosions have been witnessed at various places of Biswanath and Barpeta districts, it said, adding that embankments and roads have been damaged in Udalguri, Biswanath and West Karbi Anglong districts.
