Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today said the Chandigarh police should be allowed to function freely and conduct its probe independently in connection with the alleged attempt abducting and stalking case against two youths.
"Some questions will obviously arise.....,it was an act of goondaism" Capt Singh told reporters outside Parliament House when asked whether he thought political pressure was being mounted on the Chandigarh police in order to protect son of Haryana BJP chief.
He said the reports that "vital section of video tape has been omitted or destroyed is disturbing".
"No one should be allowed to interfere in the functioning of the police force especially when a dignity of a woman is involved," he said.
Vikas Barala, the son of Haryana's BJP chief, was arrested along with his friend but both
the accused were released later on bail as they were booked under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
The episode has embarrassed the BJP government in Haryana and the party has come under sharp attack by the Opposition Congress and other parties.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal had said that BJP state chief had "nothing to do with the incident" even as the Opposition party has demanded his resignation.
"The accused will be punished once found guilty. This is my official stand on this matter," the Chief Minister said.
The woman, in her late 20s, had accused Vikas and Ashish of stalking her and trying to abduct her on Friday night.
