IPL betting racket busted in Kanpur, 4 held, Rs 20 lakh seized
The special task force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police has busted a cricket betting racket in Kanpur with the arrest of four persons and seized Rs 20 lakh cash from them.
“Acting on a tip-off, the STF conducted raids with local police, and busted the racket,” a spokesperson said on Sunday.
The raids were conducted at three locations in Kanpur in which four persons were arrested. The arrested accused were identified as Sandeep Srivastava, Jasmeet, Deepak Lamba and Rajesh Agarwal.
The team seized Rs 20 lakh cash, laptop, several mobile phones, books displaying betting rates and diaries.
“These people used to bet on IPL matches after taking the rates from some websites. Their daily turnover is in between Rs 30 and Rs 35 lakh,” the STF spokesperson said.
Earlier, police busted an online cricket betting racket and arrested four persons of a five-member organised betting gang following a raid at a posh gated community in Visakhapatnam on May 4. However, the main accused Kalidindi Raju managed to escape and is still at large.
The police team found that the five-member gang from Bhimavaram have been accepting bets from 14 punters, who resides in Bhimavaram over mobile phones on the T-20 IPL cricket match. The police seized one multi-level communicator equipment box, one laptop, one LED TV, one printer, 34 line mobile phones, six mobile phones and Rs 2.64 lakh in cash from them.
