    PAC RBI Governor, key officers

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has served notices to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia to appear before the panel on January 19 to be questioned on demonetisation issue.

“While RBI Governor Patel has been asked to appear forenoon, two top finance ministry officials have been called to make themselves available before the 22-member panel in the afternoon,” a source told.

The development may have significant political ramifications as Opposition parties especially the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Left parties have been consistently attacking the Government on the currency ban and inconvenience caused to the people due to cash crunch.

In their sitting on December 1, the members of the PAC had unanimously supported the view that the RBI Governor and other Finance Ministry officials be called to appear before the panel and asked to explain certain things about the ban on high denomination currency notes.

The main task of the committee is to ascertain whether the money granted by Parliament has been spent by the Government “within the scope of the demand,” official source said.
