Drought selfies turn the heat on minister
At a time when Maharashtra is facing the worst drought in a century, senior minister Pankaja Munde has come under severe criticism for clicking selfies in the drought-hit areas.
Chennai
The Minister for Rural Development and Water Conservation, has been accused of “gross insensitivity” after she posted a series of selfies on Twitter clicked in Latur, reeling under drought, during a weekend tour. Munde is seen smiling at the camera against a backdrop of acres of soil being turned by earth moving machines. Although Munde, 36, accompanied the photos with texts about the work being done to conserve water, the photos that went viral, for all the wrong reason of course, triggered outrage online. The condemnation came in fast and furious. “Pankaja munde, water conservation minister of maharashtra takes a selfie while reviewing d drought situation. SHAME,” tweeted noted journalist Rana Ayyub. “Pankaja Munde took a drought selfie. Next she and Fadnavis can also take selfies with dead farmer bodies,” wrote one user. Another tweeted, “@Pankajamunde seriously a smiling selfie? Do you have any idea what it takes to get a train of water here!”
