The raids were conducted in the aftermath of the tragedy at Puttingal Devi temple in Parvoor and in view of the ensuing Vishu festival, City Police Commissioner Uma Behra said.

Four persons were arrested under the Explosive Act from four areas for storing firecrackers above the permissible limits, she said.

In Koyilandy limits, two persons - K Chandran (67) and Ajithkumar (55) - were arrested under the Act yesterday for storing and selling firecrackers more than the sanctioned quantity, Circle Inspector P Haris said.

About 2,500 kg of firecrackers was seized yesterday from Chandran's shop. He had been given licence to sell only 350 kg, the CI said.

Ajithkumar had stored around 1,000 kg of firecrackers against the permissible limit of 450 kg, he said.

The accident early on Sunday at Puttingal Devi Temple Complex had occurred during an unauthorised competitive fireworks display after a spark from a firecracker fell on the storehouse containing crackers, triggering explosions.
