Kerala to gift land to Ilayaraja
Maestro Ilayaraja was presented the prestigious ‘Nishagandhi Puraskaram’—comprising Rs 1,50,000, a citation and a statuette - by the Kerala government in recognition of his contribution to Indian film music on Wednesday.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy presented the award to Ilayaraja at the inauguration of the state tourism department’s Nishangandhi annual dance and music festival.
Oommen Chandy promised that the government would provide 5 acres land to start a music academy.
The Chief Secretary was ordered to identify the land, he said. Replying, Ilayaraja said he was happy to receive the award and that the proposed music academy “aimed to produce hundreds of Ilayarajas”.
A Padma Bhushan recipient, Ilayaraja is hailed for raising the bar of mainstream music fusing Indian folk music with various Western classical elements to create a new genre popular across regions and generations.
