The Solicitor General, representing DMRC, told a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur, that metro would add 420 more coaches in its existing trains, now having 1282 coaches, as a result of which its capacity would grow substantially.

Additionally, 486 more coaches would get added when new lines under Phase III, which would add another 110 km of metro line in 2016-17, would get operationalised, further easing the situation.

"Presently, DMRC carries 31 lakh passengers a day and by December 2017, this number will rise to 45 lakh," he said.

DMRC, however, expressed inability to increase the frequency of trains during peak hours, saying it would require heavy investments.

The law officer further said that presently, the time gap between two trains during peak hours was three minutes and reducing it further was not possible. The number of coaches can be increased and DMRC is constantly doing that, he added.

The court, which has been passing directions to curb pollution level in Delhi, had asked the DMRC to explore the possibility of providing premium service to richer passengers who can book seats in metros by paying 5-6 times more than the normal fare.

It had also asked the Solicitor General to take instruction from DMRC on augmenting the rolling stock and increasing the frequency of service in view of the ongoing implementation of odd-even formula in the national capital.
