In October this year, the Government was pulled up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for its failure to clean the river. Â Will 2016 witness a step taken to clean the river?
Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Uma Bharti said that surface cleaning of Ganga would start in January 2016in 10 cities under Namami Gange programme.
Cities Covered
Haridwar, Garhmukteshwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Sahibganj, Kolkata, Nabadwip and Gangasagar.
Cost
- Integrated Ganga Conservation Programme or Namami Gange, sanctioned at 20,000 crores. It would be implemented by 2020.
- 1,649 Gram Panchayats alongside Ganga have been identified for sanitation coverage and to free the areas from open defecation
- Boats for conducting awareness activities will be purchased at a cost of 1,25 cr (approx)Â
Government of Germany had committed assistance of three million euros for Ganga RejuvenationÂ
Close to 93 different projects had been approved at the cost of 7350.38 cr for creating treatment capacity of 858 MLD and sewer network of 3623.10 Kms
An amount of 3680 cr had been approved by EFC for River Development and Water Information Management
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) scheme released 838 crore for river restoration works. Â 320 cr was released to NCT for water sector reforms
