New educational policy to come into force next academic year

It is being drafted by a five-member committee, headed by former Union Cabinet Minister TSR Subramanian. Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smriti Irani has been making strenuous efforts to usher this in the policy currently in effect having been drafted in 1992.

The University Grants Commission, All India Council for Technical Education, Central Board of Secondary Education and several other organisations have been providing their suggestions even as Ms Irani is holding discussions with the state education ministers too.

The panel will have three retired IAS officers and an academician who will vet about 10 lakh suggestions and examine various other factors, such as the social, economic and technological changes that have taken place.

They will also consider the present educational scenario and the study of subjects that would contribute to students’ professional prospects in the future.

Their task is expected to be completed by December 31, 2015.
