Debutant director Karthik Thangavel’s script is not new as it touches on the usual topics like crimes against women, drugs, power and corrupt officials. But its treatment makes it an engaging watch. The film does take a while to get going, but once it begins to focus on the main plot with single-minded devotion, it turns into a thrill ride.
During the film’s opening credits, we get to see some interesting reports praising the achievements of cops in the city. But in the very first scene, we are introduced to an inspector (Mime Gopi) who wants to save a liquor shop, run by a politician, from the students involved in the protest. In the next scene, we come across Subhash (Jayam Ravi), an emotional yet quick-witted sub inspector, whose world revolves only around his family and girlfriend (Raashi Khanna). Just when everything seems to be fine, Subhash is assigned a case that involves a murder of a young girl, from a middle-class family. Things turn worse, when senior officials who are expected to help him with the leads, ask him to close the case as a suicide. However, Subhash continues to pursue the case and nabs the criminals responsible for the heinous act. He arrests them, too. But joint commissioner (Sampath) comes to their rescue.
It is the pre-interval block that takes this cop thriller to another level. The case turns personal for Subhash, as he loses his dear ones in no time. The second half is all about how he takes revenge on some of the highly-influential people in the society, without leaving any evidence. Despite having a plot, that’s done and dusted in Tamil cinema, Karthik’s screenplay gives a completely new dimension to it. It has some brilliant moments that makes you root for the protagonist and the emotions are quite relatable. While there are many supporting artistes, it’s Jayam Ravi, who has carried the entire film on his shoulders. He displays an intensity that is similar to what we saw him in Thani Oruvan and is effective as a tough cop. Though Raashi Khanna doesn’t have much to do, she fits in perfectly for the role and justifies for what she has been called for. CS Sam’s background score elevates the entire mood of the film.
The flaws are something that’s usual for this kind of a genre — like the scenes where the hero escapes with the help of technology without leaving any trace. Overall, Adanga Maru is an interesting fast-paced cop thriller that deserves a watch.
