Film Review: 'Silukkuvarpatti Singam' provides a hearty laugh

Silukkuvarpatti Singam is Vishnu Vishal’s third comedy film in two years after Velainu Vandhutta Vellakaaran (VVV) and Kathanayagan. However, the film garnered high expectation ahead of its release after Vishnu’s blockbuster Raatchasan, a psycho thriller and was recently named the second best Indian movie of the year after Andhadhun.

But Silukkuvarpatti Singam unlike Raatchasan is a light-hearted comedy. Directed by Chella Ayavvu, the writer of VVV, the story is set in the backdrop of Silukkuvarpatti, a town near Madurai. Sathyamoorthy (Vishnu Vishal), a police constable leads a mediocre life, who thinks that his job is to buy tea and tiffin for his superiors. He doesn’t want to get himself involved in any serious issues. A dreaded gangster Cycle Shankar, who is on the run from the police goes to Silukkuvarpatti to murder an ex minister, Nilakottai Narayanan (Mansoor Ali Khan). Sathyamoorthy loses his cool for a trivial reason, beats up Cycle Shankar without knowing that he is the gangster that the cops in Chennai are on lookout for and puts him behind bars. This forms for the first half of the film. The second half picks up from where it ended in the interval and comical graph elevates the film from one scene to the other.

The first 20 minutes of the film looks like a drag because of the character introduction and sub plots. However, it is justified as the movie progresses. We are introduced to hilarious characters like constable Bhaskar (Karunakaran) Tony (Yogi Babu), Anandraj (Share Auto Chandran) and Sneha Brother, who tickle our funny bone with their repartees for the main dialogue.

Chella Ayyavu impresses us with his ability to write for almost 30 characters and keep the humour and plot intact. Vishnu Vishal’s transformation from a serious cop in Raatchasan to a carefree constable in Silukkuvarpatti... is something to look out for and has managed to impress us. He has yet again proved that he can effortlessly take up any genre and emerge successful. Regina Cassandra as Rajeshwari has certainly justified playing a heroine in a comedy film. Her role reminds us of the actress carrying forward her role of Paapaa in Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga five years ago. While other characters are either funny or frustrated or crooked, Rajeshwari is one of the very few characters in the film, who has been given the pedestal to portray various emotions. Laxman’s cinematography has enhanced the humour. Yogi Babu and Karunakaran’s sense of humour is one of the major contributions for the film’s success. Though Oviya appears in an extended cameo, her role has a good connect to the storyline. Chella has lived up to his producer and hero Vishnu’s faith and has provided us an entertaining comedy that will appeal the family audiences.
