Vijay Antony’s films are always known for their unique storylines and subtle performances. But the trailer and sneak peek videos from the film rather showed us a different side of Vijay Antony.

Chennai

Playing a police for the first time, he looks fit and his dialogues were louder than his previous films. Of late, Vijay Antony’s films have been catering to the masses, and Thimiru Pudichavan is not exception.

Within minutes, we are introduced to sub-inspector Murugavel (Vijay Antony), who lives with his younger brother Ravi. Ravi hates his brother for being a straightforward and unyeilding person, which he finds difficult to put up with and leaves for Chennai. A few years later, Murugavel gets transferred to Chennai as the inspector in the Royapettah police station. Much to his shock he meets his brother, now a juvenile criminal, who commits murders based on the instructions given to him by Meesa Padma (Sai Dheena). Meanwhile, we are introduced to Madona (Nivetha Pethuraj), the sub inspector of the police station. She impresses us right from the beginning with her Chennai accent backed by a natural performance. Her ability to dub for herself has enhanced her roles time and again. We are introduced to several characters in the first half, especially the teenagers, who steal the show as criminals. Sai Dheena joins them later to provide a power-packed first half.

Ten minutes to the interval, and that is where we start feeling that the film is a drag. With too many messages, and hero worship dialogues, the plot slowly starts to unravel. The second half begins with the same pace, but Vijay Antony provides some relief with good performance. His action scenes are well-balanced with sentiments. His over-the-top dialogues do not bore us. The strength of Thimir Pudichavan lies in the way in which the supporting roles are penned. Even atmosphere artistes have justified their performances. It is in the anti-climax portions, the film falls flat. Dramatic stunt sequences and hero worship dialogues make Thimiru Pudichavan just another commercial film. The songs in the second half are inappropriate and could have been chopped off. Cinematography by Richard M Nathan has lifted the film. Overall, good performances with a message make Thimiru Pudichavan a one-time watch.
