“It’s an interesting fusion that nobody else is really doing in the country. It all started when I was working on an album called Trance with Khusrow,” Kanishk begins as an introduction. Poetry is as old as 800 years written by Sufi musician and scholar, Amir Khusrow, forms the lyrics for some of these songs.
At his recital in Chennai too, patrons can expect to hear this. “I will be performing some of my original compositions too and overall, I can say that it’ll be a surreal and soulful experience. When it comes to collaborating with Devashri, Kanishk says, “We’ve been performing together for the last three years. Our first gig together was at the Enchanted Valley Carnival in Aamby Valley City.”
It’s not his first gig in Chennai, says the youngster, “We’ve performed at Saarang, IIT Madras.” When asked if it was a memorable one, “To be honest, I don’t think the audience was very receptive — they enjoyed the music but weren’t able to understand or connect with the lyrics,” he has to say. This is but natural as many of the bygone poets wrote in Persian, Urdu, older version of Hindi and Awadhi. “I’ll be explaining the intent behind each composition before we perform it so I’m hoping it’ll be better this time around,” smiles Kanishk.
One of the main reasons behind this multi-city tour is to explore more regions and expand their audience. “We’ve predominantly played in Maharashtra and other cities in the north but we wanted to venture beyond borders and languages — isn’t that what music is all about anyway?” he signs off.
Kanishk and Devashri will be performing at Wandering Artist, 51, 6th Main Road, RA Puram, on July 21 at 7 pm.
