The film opens with Mahendran (Jayaprakash) telling his team members at a conference held at the Defence Space Division that a giant asteroid is going to strike near Chennai, posing a threat to over four crore people.
Right at this time, a secret informant reveals to India that an illegal heavy missile, existing in a vault in a Chinese spacecraft, is the only way this asteroid can be destroyed before it enters Earth’s safe zone. He also tells them that most countries aren’t aware that such a missile exists, so India can steal it without China’s knowledge.
For this mission, they hire Vasu (Jayam Ravi) and his team Venkat (Ramesh Thilak) and Appu, accompanied by Lieutenant Swathi (Nivetha Pethuraj) and Colonel Raguram (Vincent Asokan). Though the storyline is predictable from there on, it is how the film has been executed for a new genre that makes Tik Tik Tik an engrossing watch.
If you’re wondering whether the film is worthy of the title of India’s first space film, yes it is — the makers have been honest in their attempt.
Though the screenwriting and dialogues are mediocre, the performances and information on how things work in space will leave the audience amazed. It shouldn’t be compared to Hollywood projects like Interstellar and Gravity, for this film scores well in terms of execution, given the budget and technology in India.
The VFX, may seem amateur in the beginning, but gets better with scenes. Though it could have been improved, the director has gone over every minute detail and presented it with finesse.
The film also strikes a balance between an offbeat and commercial entertainer.
Jayam Ravi has evolved with this film. His performance and courage to take up such scripts should be lauded. His son Aarav makes an impressive debut on-screen and their father-son relationship is captured nicely on the big screen.
Nivetha Pethuraj has enacted her role well yet again after Oru Naal Koothu and Podhuvaaga En Manasu Thangam.
Ramesh and Arjun with their timely comedy have done a good job. Even characters like Jayaprakash and Rethika proved to be crucial and have given natural performances. Music director Imman is surely the other hero of the film.
The background score and a track titled Kurumba take the movie to another level. Overall, Tik Tik Tik deserves a watch for the attempt.
