How much salt do babies need? — Meera Mohan, PurasawalkamÂ
“Babies and children only need a very small amount of salt in their diet. However, because salt is added to a lot of the food you buy, such as bread, and even biscuits, it is easy to have too much. When you start introducing solid foods, remember not to add salt to the foods you give to your baby, because their kidneys cannot cope with it. You should also avoid giving your baby readymade foods that are not made specifically for babies, such as breakfast cereals, because they can also be high in salt. Lots of foods produced for children can be quite high in salt, so it is important to check the nutritional information before you buy. — Dr Parvathy S, NutritionistÂ
Why does an individual get mouth ulcers? Is there a quick remedy to cure it? — Gautham S, AdyarÂ
Ulcer is nothing but a discontinuity in the protection layer of the mouth. This causes exposure of underlying nerves and blood vessels to harsh oral environment. Any ulcer that repeatedly occurs or does not heal within 7 days would need to be investigated. Oral ulcers can occur due to various conditions. In a typical  youngster, the cause could range from simple nutritional deficiency, trauma, thermal injury, to food materials, badlyformed teeth or secondary to substance abuse. If problem persists, consult a dentist. Selfmedication should be avoided. - Dr S M Balaji, Chairman, Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital
