A dysfunctional family is something we all know first-hand or through our circle of friends and acquaintances.

And if you have ever wondered at the dynamics in the relationship between a son and father or a mother and son in a nuclear family, playwright Gowri Ramnarayan hopes to provide the answers through her latest play, When things fall apart, as part of the two-day Justfest, on June 24 and 25.

“The play is a take on the legend of Dronacharya, the martial arts instructor of kings and princes in the Mahabharata but it’s about our families, about life in the time of terror; on a crumbling cosmos and how families deal with it,” says Gowri of the 80-minute play which will be staged on June 24.

Renowned artistes Akhila Ramnarayan, Sunandha Raghunathan and V Balakrishnan feature in When things fall apart . An important feature of her plays is the seamless infusion of classical elements of music and dance.

“Music and words come together for me, but I like to experiment. When I start to write, I do not know if it will have Bharatantyam or Kalari or simple poetry, but everything has worked well,” she adds.

Renowned singers like TM Krishna, Bombay Jayashri and Nisha Rajagopal and Bharatanatyam exponents such as Priyadarshini Govind have all performed in her plays. “People ask me why I do what I do.

My only answer is that I question things, because I have a responsibility today, living in this world, to raise such questions,” says Gowri. The two-day event, to be held at Alliance Francaise auditorium, will also felicitate popular city playwrights Na Muthuswamy and Indira Parthasarathy.
