Q&A: Using music for the cause of girl child
Roopa Menon gave up her plum corporate career to start her NGO, The Fairy God Mother Charitable Trust, about eight years ago to help fund education of girl children. A special fundraising concert, Gaane Jaane Maane is being held on January 22, 6.30 pm by the NGO.
Chennai
Why and when did you decide to start the NGO?Â
Being a corporate executive, I had to deploy a full-time cook at home. Once she turned up late and on being questioned about the delay, she broke down and informed that her elder daughter, who was a very good student, had attempted self-immolation because she was harassed in school for not being able to pay her fees. This incident moved me and I decided to work towards the cause of educating girls from modest backgrounds.Â
How do you go about it?Â
We help girls who rank in the top 10 in their class and sponsor their tuition fees, books and uniform.Â
Tell us about the showÂ
I have also been a singer for a decade and was a part of an orchestra. While I had to give it up owing to my career plans, my team members continue to sing as Friends Orchestra under conductor Raffi. They will perform a list of hits from old and contemporary Hindi films. The funds raised from the event will be used to support the present projects and future events.
