Kishore Singh, President of DAG Modern, talks to us about their collection, investing in art and more

Why should one invest in art?

Unlike vacations, cars or clothes, art works are always unique. If you own an artwork by a certain artist, you can rest assured you will be the only one with it. So owning an artwork gives you a certain stature and even reflects your personality. In addition, they are great conversation starters! Over the last few years, there has been a lot of interest in investing in art. It is a hearty trend.

What are the kind of artworks that will be up for preview?

We are putting up a coveted line-up of close to ninety artworks from modernist masters. On view will be works depicting a uniquely indigenous modernism that the 20th century ushered in India. The repertoire boasts of masters such as Nandalal Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Raja Ravi Verma sharing space with modernist masters as MF Husain, SH Raza, Jeram Patel, FN Souza, Himmat Shah, SK Bakre, Ganesh Pyne and KG Subramanyan.

How do you intend to make art accessible to people?

We want to ensure that art is accessible to everybody at a level they can appreciate it. An auction is a perfect way to let the market evaluate their worth. We plan to hold auctions not just in Mumbai and New Delhi, but also in other major cities, as well as tier-II towns. All other auction houses charge a buyer’s premium, that the buyer has to bear. By ensuring that there is no buyer’s premium, we guarantee that works bought at our auctions is less expensive than peers.
