    New photo-series highlights society’s aversion to dark skin

    The Indian obsession for fair skin is a much-discussed and debated across mediums. Photographer Arjun Kamath’s new photo series (he was the man behind the hit photo series Avani ) captures the journey of a dark-skinned woman in Indian society, that loves the fairer skin.

    Shared from June 19 to August 21, the series chronicles the life of Ranika and her parents. Ranika is a dark complexioned girl whose parents are unable to find a suitable match for her. This is because parents of prospective grooms reject and insult her on account of her dark complexion. 

    This sad story repeats itself until the girl meets someone who suffers from the same issues as she does. The story unfolds over 37 photos and there is accompanying text that tells Ranika’s story. 

    The brilliant series is a blend of photography, theatre and folk storytelling. The series has touched a chord with many as we are all like Ranika, battling and overcoming our own inner demons and insecurities.
