Please share more details about the play
It is a hybrid act between stand-up and theatre. Set in present-day Mumbai, The Scent of a Man is a riotous and uproarious adult comedy on lust, lies and infidelity, pickled with generous doses of repartee, wit and sarcasm. This is the tale of a love quadrilateral gone awry.
AGP World has been at the forefront of corporatisation of theatre and making it successful and sustainable. What made you plan this collaboration?
I was broke! I realised I would need to tie-up with corporates to make them sustainable. The government wasn’t supporting the cause of theatre, but the corporates were very encouraging. We have forged alliances with private sector banks, FMCGs, IT companies and insurance providers to drive business for corporates through a carefully integrated theatre platform. Corporate tie-ups are made to generate a captive audience. Bundling theatre with commerce is a mutually-beneficial offering. I realised that corporatisation is a viable solution and of course, I have ensured that it doesn’t dilute the essence of theatre.
Chennai is a discerning audience. Any changes you had to make in the adult comedy to stage it here?
I would say it is a sensitive audience and we have tried to keep the comedy a little understated as compared to other cities.
