Chennai
Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewellery, mobiles etc.
These items can all be used as thoughtfully designed gifts which many people would highly appreciate. There are advanced techniques and different sized paper that are used to create 3D miniatures, abstract art, and quilled flowers among many things. The art, apart from being a creative hobby has also become a source of income for many.
Materials Needed :
- A4 size Cardstock (white or Offwhite- 240 gsm)
- Two Round Objects to mark the outline (Bigger size & Smaller size)
- Scissors (To cut the crescent Shape)
- Acrylic Paint (Your choice of color)
- Fevicol MR (Glue)
- Stone Chain
- Pearl Chain
- Eye pin, Bead cap, Round pearl bead
- Pearl Half beads (5mm)
- Ear hook
Step 1:
Take an A4 size Cardstock (240 gsm) and fold it into 2 halves. On top of it, with the bigger size object draw an outline with a pencil or pen. While choosing the bigger object make sure that this size decides your size of the chandbali. Now using the smaller object, draw an inner circle. Mark the centre point of the smaller object size and draw a straight line on both sides as shown in the above figure. Now the highlighted one is the major part in your chandbali.
Step 2:
Now you get two crescent shapes and paint them completely on the front side alone. Leave the other side as such.
Step 3:
Once it’s dried, apply Fevicol to the curved edge as shown in the picture. Assemble the stone chain and pearl chain both to the crescent shapes accordingly. Now, the entire paper base is ready.
Step 4:
Take up one paper base and apply glue on the other side which is white in colour. Let it dry for 2 minutes. Place the eye pin on top of the glue as shown in photo and hold it for few seconds so that it gets stuck to the paper base. Usually metal finds it difficult to get stuck to paper. So stick it firmly and let it get embedded to the glue.
Step 5:
Now place the other paper base on top of the bottom paper base. Arrange the bead cap in such a way so that it gets seated on top of the paper base. Stick the pearl half beads (5mm) to cover the irregular shape and to give a grand look.
Step 6:
Once it’s ready, take an ear hook and extend it. Now connect the loop to eye pin and leave the other side onto the other eye pin. A perfect, simple and elegant chandbali is ready to be worn.
NOTE: You can also use invitation cards that you have at home. It is an ideal way of making the best out of waste.
