Bringing in the cool world of comics
The first ever Maruti Suzuki Alto Comic Book Celebration Week was held from July 4 to 10 by Comic Con India. As a part of this workshops are being held across seven cities, including Chennai. Illustrator and animator Abhijeet Kini will be in the city on Saturday for a workshop at IIT Madras campus.

How do you perceive the indigenous comics scene at the moment?
The idea of Indian comic strips is synonymous with Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle. Many of us have spent our growing up years reading them. But over the years, owing to TV and Internet comics took a backseat. However, from 2011, I have noticed renewed interest. There is a lot of curiosity among enthusiasts and many of them have put forth their interest in starting and publishing comic strips. There is a huge potential market for desi comics.
Tell us about the process of creating a comic strip
I have often heard people saying art reflects society. But I believe society reflects art. I try to create a comic strip by relating it to the closest possible person. It could be a relative, a neighbour or even a friend. After that I create a plot in my mind and then depending on the number of pages to be allocated to it, split the idea across the pages into different panels.
So what is the workshop going to be all about?
It will offer an opportunity for enthusiasts to learn the basics of comic creation and then use it to create their own comic strip.
