Thinking out-of-the-box
Sandbox Collective, a Bangalore based arts collective brings together individuals interested in re-thinking and re-imagining the scope of the performing arts. They essay multiple roles as artists, art administrators, producers, directors and curators on performances, shows, festivals and tours.
Chennai
The Sandbox Collective in association with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan will perform a children’s play How Cow Now Cow in the Chennai on June 11 and 12.Â
Tell us about the play. Is it the first time it is being presented in Chennai?Â
The play is adapted from Andri Beyeler’s Rosemarie the Cow. It is about a cow, Rosamma (we have localised the name), who troubles other animals in a farm. She becomes cranky and argumentative and disrupts the peace in the farm. The story is about what happens to Rosamma. Shadow play, storytelling, music and object theatre bring the play alive. It has been performed about 50 times so far in cities like Bengaluru, Kerala, Puducherry and Guwahati but this is our first time in Chennai and we are most excited to be here.
Is it harder or easier to entertain children as compared to adults?Â
It’s different, is what we can say. A play for children appeals to a different set of needs, even in an adult. I think a good children’s play should work for adults as well. With children there are no filters, you know immediately whether they are engaged, bored or irritated. And, their responses have been delightful so far. It makes working on children’s plays a very joyful experience.Â
What is the one common thread that binds your diverse team together?
Food! We eat at very chance we get. We even schedule our work around breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea breaks.
