Mum in Chewbacca mask shatters Facebook Live record
It was the laugh that was heard around the world, one that made a Texas woman an overnight internet sensation.

Candace Payne’s Facebook video that showed her trying on a Chewbacca (a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise) mask and joyfully laughing, went viral quickly after she shared it on May 19. Just as quickly as over 55 million people watched the clip, the stores sold out of that mask. On Thursday, the 37-year-old mother of two, from Dalls, Texas, was returning some items and was going to spend her birthday money on some exercise clothes or something “for the kids”. But when she stumbled upon the braying Chewbacca mask, Payne, who is not even a Star Wars fan bought it and tried it on and made a Facebook Live video that she broadcast from the store’s car park. She explained in the video that she would like to say it was for her son, but in reality, it’s an additional birthday present for herself.
And who can blame her? The mask is designed so when the wearer opens their mouth, the mouth of the mask also opens and emits Chewy’s infamous call. For about two minutes Payne sits in her car and howls with laughter, with Chewbacca’s throaty whoop sounding off at the same time. “It’s the simple joys in life…” Payne posted with the video. “Everyone should have a mask like this and a mirror… The most joyful Wookie ever!!!!”
