Sindhis to celebrate Cheti Chand on Friday
Last week we had look at how the Telugu community is gearing up to ring in Ugadi and the Maharashtrians are looking forward to celebrate Gudi Pahwa on April 8.

Today we focus on the Sindhi community, that is looking forward to revel in their New Year festivities. It is known as Cheti Chand. There are more than 5,000 Sindhi families in Chennai city.
- The Sindhi community celebrates the festival of Cheti Chand in honour of the birth of Ishtadeva Uderolal, popularly known as Jhulelal, the patron saint of the Sindhis. This day is considered to be very auspicious and is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. On this day, people worship water – the elixir of life.
- On this special day, the women of the house usually prepare the puja thaal with an oil lamp, fruits, coconut, flowers, leaves along with a deity of Jhulelal is very carefully submersed in the river praying for the wellness of the community. They prepare a conical lamp, Bherano with wheat, cardamom, cloves, kumkum and flowers.
- Sindhu Sadan in Egmore has a lot of events lined up for Cheti Chand. There will be cultural programmes followed by a delicious langar and a procession to the beach.
- Special Sindhi delicacies like dal pakwan, aloo tuk, kaale chane, kheer and thairee is prepared in houses.
