    What does DAMA do?

DAMA was founded because we thought it was important for handlooms to sell at the local market and contribute to the economy. We want to make weaving a viable source of income for weavers in Andhra and Telangana. We sell our handloom products through various channels — from tying up with retail stores to hosting exhibitions.

How do you manage to engage the weavers?

We work with weavers from 22 villages and 7 districts of Andhra and Telangana. Weavers are vulnerable as there is not enough work for all through the year. Working closely with cooperative societies that have weavers as members, we ensure that they get at least 260 days of work in which they come up with quality products in sync with today’s consumer demands.

Do you see a huge market in Chennai for Andhra weaves?

Our Chennai customers are loyal but are price-sensitive. Since we are into handlooms, most of our sarees are priced above Rs 1,000. In Chennai we have a niche market, if not huge. People who value handlooms and environmentalists are our clientele.
