For Madhav, it was all about the instrument- Anil Srinivasan
Pianist Anil Srinivasan, a close friend of Chennai-based jazz pianist Madhav Chari, who passed away during the early hours of November 20, shares his fondest memories of one of India’s most talented instrumentalists.
Chennai
Madhav Chari was definitely one of our country’s most talented musicians and the best jazz pianist we ever had. He was a man who lived for his music. For Madhav, it was all about the instrument. He didn’t think beyond it.
I spoke to Madhav eight days ago, when he was in the ICU. It was so heartening that he made it a point to speak to me. We even made plans to meet for a cup of coffee next week… But now…
Madhav and I go back a long way. We spent hours and hours discussing jazz and piano. Every time we had these creative dialogues, it felt like a brilliant lecture — it was filled with so much knowledge.
When it comes to his talent, Madhav is a head and shoulders above everyone. I have so many fond memories of him. I remember that way back in 2005, he played at my house, exclusively for me and my family. No matter where he played — on a makeshift stage in my house or at a grand auditorium, his music was spectacular and magical. He was very dedicated to his craft.
Beyond music, Madhav was such an interesting person. He had his likes and dislikes and was never afraid to express his opinions. He never held back criticism on the grounds of politeness nor refrained from giving credit where it was due. He was remark¬ably honest and had a strong conviction.
Madhav’s passing away makes me distraught. Last year, (Mandolin U.) Srinivas passed away and he was only in his 40s and this year, Madhav is no more. I think it was too soon for him to go. He was such an innocent soul. His demise is a huge loss for the piano fraternity. We will miss him tremendously.
