Tug-of-war with a lion: New contest in zoo receives backlash from animal activists

A zoo in the United Kingdom came under fire for offering its visitors a chance to play a challenging game of tug-of-war with its lions and tigers for a small fee. Zoogoers at Dartmoor Zoo can join a team of four at a long rope to rival a big cat, according to The Guardian. A piece of meat attached to the end of the rope coaxes the lion or tiger into biting the end and giving it a good tug. The challengers are pulling from the other side of the enclosure and do not come into close contact with the wild animals. The zoo says the activity is beneficial to the big cats, allowing them to get the vital exercise they need.

Chicago man’s winter proposal written in snow is winning hearts online
A Chicago man popped the question to his girlfriend by spelling it out on snow at a park outside his girlfriend’s office so she could see it from the window of her office that was on the 37th floor. It did not take long for the grand gesture to go viral after a picture of it was shared by Chicago Park District on Facebook along with a caption that read, “Chicago’s parks offer some of the best backdrops for marriage proposals. Someone just popped the big question at Maggie Daley Park. She said yes! Did you propose in a Chicago park?”

Estonian construction workers rescue wolf from frozen river thinking it’s a dog
Kind-hearted Estonian workers rushed to rescue a dog in distress from a freezing river on Wednesday — unaware of the fact they were actually about to bundle a wild wolf into their car. The men were working on the Sindi dam on the Parnu river when they spotted the animal trapped in the icy water. After clearing a path through the ice, they took the frozen canine to a clinic for medical care. Only then was it revealed they had been carrying a wolf. The Estonian Union for the Protection of Animals (EUPA) said the wolf had low blood pressure when it arrived at the veterinarian’s office, which may have explained its docile nature after the men carried it to their car to warm it up.
