Video of DM’s misogynistic speech goes viral
Aurangabad District Magistrate Kanwal Tanuj has landed himself in a soup by telling a villager to sell his wife if he didn’t have the money to build toilets! The statement was made while he was addressing a group of 500 villagers at Jamhor during Swachhta Mahasabha — an awareness programme against open defecation.

A video of the statement is going viral and drawing grave criticism on social media now. Tarun told the villagers that the poor are entitled to a reimbursement of Rs 12,000 for toilet construction under a combination of the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Seven Resolves. This prompted one of the villagers to say, ‘We are poor.
We don’t have the money to get a toilet built. Please give us the cash in advance.’ The annual per capita income in Aurangabad’s rural areas is only Rs 12,300. So, the Bihar DM was essentially asking the villagers to set aside a year’s earning for a toilet and await reimbursement.
The IAS officer shot back, “Is Rs 12,000 more than your wife’s dignity? Can you let your wife be raped just because you say you don’t have Rs 12,000? If you don’t have the money, go and sell your wife or auction her.”
He later tried to justify himself by pointing out that sexual assault cases against women who step out to relieve themselves at night were increasing in the village. But it hasn’t gone down well with the Twitterati, who are now calling for action against the DM.
