“I play a man, who suffers from night blindness in Sixer. In the film, I play a software professional, who leaves from his work at quarter to six everyday on the dot as he turns blind from six in the evening,” Vaibhav reveals as we start the conversation.

When it comes to night blindness and Tamil cinema, every film buff will be reminded of Goundamani’s comedy from Chinna Thambi. As we tell Vaibhav those dialogues, the actor tells us another interesting fact.

“The movie is inspired from Goundamani sir’s night blindness comedy from Chinna Thambi. I play his grandson according to the story. He is a legend, isn’t he?” says Vaibhav as he cracks up. Director of the film Chachi agrees with Vaibhav and tells us, “I started writing the story after I watched the comedy on television. It is easy to write a script when a director gets the right line and I completed the story of Sixer in just 10 minutes.”

As he talks, his phone rings, which also is Goundamani’s dialogue from Chinna Thambi. “Everyone thinks Sixer is only the second film after Chinna Thambi that talks about night blindness. It isn’t because we recently heard from someone that it was Sivaji Ganesan sir, who first played the character in a film called Thavapudhalvan that released in 1972,” Vaibhav clarifies. Vaibhav was Chachi’s choice as he finished penning the script of Sixer. “I wanted a hero, who could carry the role with innocence, which Vaibhav has in abundance,” he laughs. Just like his besties Jai and Premgi? “I now understand your definition of innocence and I won’t answer this question,” Vaibhav replies.

The film has Sathish as the comedian and Vaibhav immediately recalls an on-location incident. “We were shooting in Elliots Beach in Besant Nagar and Sathish saw a physically challenged person fall off his wheelchair. He rushed to help him and put him back on the seat. The man yelled abuses at Sathish and told him he deliberately jumped off the wheelchair to sleep on the pavement and asked Sathish to help him get off his chair again. We all had a good laugh,” shares the actor. Chachi could hardly smile because he was reminded of the challenges he faced while shooting. “We shot the entire film in some sensitive areas across Chennai. There were murders that happened nearby the shooting spot and we had to cancel the shoot after assembling the entire team. However, we are ready to release now, and Sixer will be a laugh riot for two hours and 15 minutes,” he concludes.
