CHENNAI: City Mayor R Priya on Friday conducted a high-level meeting to review the flood mitigation measures ahead of the upcoming Northeast monsoon.

The meeting held at the Ripon Building was attended by senior officials from more than 30 departments in which evacuation, flood safety, outbreak of the water borne infections and repair of battered roads were discussed in detail.

Officials from Tangedco, Southern Railway, Coast guard, PWD, WRD, Public health, Chennai metro water, Weather department attended the meeting during which water logging and prevention of electrocution were also discussed.

The Mayor also ascertained the preventive works taken up by the stormwater drain work department which is taking up the desilting and drain construction works covering 1356 km at a cost of Rs 71.25 crore.

The meeting also discussed about the low-lying areas that are vulnerable for flooding and provision of high power motor pumps in subways and road intersections were discussed. During the interaction the mayor also discussed to the Chennai metro water engineers about the uninterrupted drinking water supply for city people and urge the water managers to ensure adequate chlorination of drinking water.

The civic body authorities instructed tree surgeons to remove the fallen trees and branches on the road during the monsoon. Personnel should be available round the clock daily to promptly repair power outages.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, deputy mayor M Magesh Kumar, Dr Shanthakumari of Public health, Vishwanathan (Education), M Sivaguru Prabhakaran (North zone) and other officials from various departments took part in the review meeting.
