Chennai Corporation seized 5,447 cattle from Jan-Sept this year
After the stray cattle are seized, the owners should submit an affidavit stating to release the cows from the respective shed.
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has seized 5,447 stray cattle from January to September 2022 to control nuisance among the public. And as many as 131 cattle were impounded from October 1-7.
The civic authorities caught the cattle with the help of veterinary doctors and police took it to the shed at Pudupet and Perambur.
“The stray animals were caught between January and September; the owners were fined Rs 1,550 per cow. From October 1, the penalty increased to Rs 2,000. If they don’t pay the fine for two days and do not take back the cattle. From the third day onwards, Rs 200 is charged as the maintenance fee, ” stated the official release.
After the stray cattle are seized, the owners should submit an affidavit stating to release the cows from the respective shed.
The document must be signed by the zonal health officer, veterinary assistant, health inspector and the police station nearby their house or cattle sheds. When the cow is impounded for the third time, it will be handed over to the Blue Cross of India.
As per the data by GCC, the civic body authorities caught 344 cattle in 2020. In 2021, a total of 1,259 cows were seized in the city.
Compared to the last two years, in the last nine months, the number of cattle caught has increased to 5,447.
Of which, the highest cows were seized in August, with 823; 822 cattle were taken away to the shed in March.
Cow owners are advised to keep their animals, and not let them wander on the streets, which poses a threat to the public.
