CHENNAI: A group of men who entered the house of a farmer pretending to give a wedding invitation looted 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments at knifepoint in Thirukazhukundram in Chengalpattu on Wednesday.

The incident happened inside the house of Mahadevan (55), a farmer of Kothimangalam. Police said that on Wednesday, Mahadevan, his wife, Parvathi, and son, Karthick, were sitting outside their house when four men who came in a car introduced themselves as Mahadevan's relatives. Mahadevan invited them inside the house thinking that they might be distant relatives who had come to invite them.

After entering the house, one of them closed the main door and the trio took knives to threaten them to handover the valuables.

Later, the group locked the family inside a room and looted 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments along with Rs 7,000 and escaped in a car.

Mahadevan filed a complaint at the Thirukazhukundram police station and a case was registered. Police are trying to identify the burglars with the help of CCTV footage. Police said the gang had covered the number plate of the vehicle with mud.
